PANJIM: Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday announced that Goa Tourism will celebrate the 350th coronation anniversary of the iconic Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with a grand celebration on February 18 and 19, on the occasion of Shivjayanti. Addressing a press conference, Khaunte said on February 18, Bicholim will be abuzz with cultural fervor and excitement as the Akhil Goa Veshbhusha Spardha (fancy dress contest) kicks off. The inaugural programme will feature the traditional ‘Deep Prajwalan’ ceremony and an invocation song. The evening will culminate with the All Goa Mahila Fugdi Spardha, celebrating the spirit of womanhood through this traditional Goan dance form. On February 19, Bicholim will witness a vibrant rally commencing from Bordem, showcasing live characters depicting the coronation act. The rally will proceed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Maidan in Bicholim, featuring captivating performances by groups showcasing Dindi, Lezim, Dhol Tashe, Patak, and more. The evening will be adorned with cultural programs and the distribution of prizes, adding to the festive atmosphere and celebrating the rich heritage of Goa. On same day in the evening at Porvorim, the event will unfold with the unveiling of the Shivaji Maharaj Statue near IHM College. The day’s festivities will continue into the evening, commencing with an inaugural function followed by an enchanting cultural program, featuring performances by Nandesh Umap and Troupe namely SHIVSOHLA.
