PANJIM: In a major setback to Goa University (GU), the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has downgraded its ranking from ‘A’ Grade to the present B++ Grade.
This serves as a major embarrassment to GU’s image as a top institution of the country and its efforts to improve its Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and ranking. The GU has now been accredited with B++ Grade by the NAAC with a CGPA of 2.86 points.
It may be recalled that earlier Goa University was allotted an ‘A’ Grade (CGPA of 3.01–3.25) for the 2014-10 period, the validity of which had ended in September 2019. Incidentally, the GU was being reassessed by NAAC after three years.
Reacting to the new grade allotted, Registrar of Goa University Vishnu Nadkarni, said they will issue a detailed statement, on Wednesday.
“We are studying the report and are also going for an appeal as per NAAC’s procedure,” Nadkarni informed Herald on Tuesday night.
The NAAC’s peer review team had visited the GU between April 5 and 6, where it assessed the varsity for allotment of a new grade as part of the re-accreditation process. This team had prepared a criterion-wise analysis after evaluating on qualitative indicators and had also made recommendations on quality enhancement.
It is to be noted that 30 per cent weightage is given to the NAAC’s peer review team’s visit while 30 per cent weightage is given on quantitative assessment.
