PANJIM: Goa University Vice-Chancellor Varun Sahani on Friday said the university has set up an IQAC (internal quality assurance cell) to analyse the reasons for drop in rank from 20th last year to 64th this year. However, the VC pointed out that more faculty members could have improved GU’s rank, as currently there are almost 44 percent posts vacant.
“There has been over the last few days some adverse commentary about the Goa University (GU) having gone down in the NIRF ranking from 20th rank last year to current 64th position. I have been going through this commentary with a mixture of gladness and amusement, gladness because I am delighted as there are so many stakeholders who are genuinely concerned about the university and standards we have,” said Sahani.
“In arithmetical terms 20 out of 233 is almost exactly 64 out of 724, so the system has expanded enormously over the last year and anybody who knows about proportions and ratios knows that 20 out of 233 is exactly 64 of 724. It is a matter of concern in the sense that we want to try to figure out what is that we can do to be better. Practically I have noticed that there have been five universities which were behind us last year now have gone above us in the NIRF ranking and with that I have set up my IQAC folks to really go and look about the issue and figure out of what is that they have done to change their ranks,” Sahani said.
He further pointed out that another major concern at the GU is about filling out vacancies at the university as currently there are 44 percent of vacancies vacant which is a huge number. “I have personally gone through the report and looked at the rankings closely but I feel that we are probably the best small university in the country and size does matter,” he added.
