MARGAO: Stating that as the fishing season has come to a close for two months, the threat of vector-borne diseases needs to be tackled, GOACAN has urged the South Goa Deputy Collector to convene an urgent meeting of all stakeholders to discuss the threat of vector-borne diseases and other pending issues at the Cutbona Fishing Jetty.
GOACAN co-ordinator Roland Martins said, “We have sent a letter to Deputy Collector, South on Monday.”

Roland said, “The threat of vector-borne diseases needs to be tackled by implementing the Advisory issued by Dr Anant Palekar, Deputy Director National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme (NVBDCP) DHS.”
According to GOACAN, in the past, the threat of malaria and dengue affected many residents living in proximity of the fishing Jetty and within the Velim panchayat jurisdiction. “These concerns were later highlighted by the Velim Civic and Consumer Forum (VCCF) which resulted in site inspections and follow up action by the Balli Primary Health Centre”, he said.
GOACAN said, “Past experiences have shown that if preventive steps are not put in place it could lead to deaths. The present second wave of COVID-19 pandemic has already traumatised people and the spread of vector borne disease will only create an additional burden.”
“Other matters highlighted in the letter that need to be deliberated include the requirement of mobile toilets at the jetty, the construction of the 50-seater toilet block, setting up of a sewage treatment plant, proper cleanliness and waste management and regular meetings of the Jetty Management Committee”, he said.
