MARGAO: GOACAN has written to the South Goa Collector informing that the people of Pajifond area of Margao are fearful and anxious about the quality of water supplied by the PWD, after it was highlighted in the media that the underground water pipelines in the area is old and corroded.
In the letter, GOACAN has pointed out that the matter of the old and corroded pipes came to light only when the plumbers dug up an underground water line.
“Consumers are now asking whether the drinking water supplied via the aging water distribution lines is safe and fit for human consumption. Do the decades old water distribution lines conform to safety norms to ensure the health of the consumers? What then is the state of the underground water pipelines in other parts of Margao and Salcete taluka? What is the state of the underground water pipelines in other talukas of South Goa District?” the letter states.
GOACAN has requested the Collector, in his capacity as chairman of the South Goa District Consumer Protection Council, to convene an urgent meeting of the PWD, Health Services, Food & Drug Administration and Consumer Affairs to review the situation and record the standards required to be followed for the delivery of safe drinking water.
GOACAN has pointed out that the intervention by the District Collector would go a long way in creating confidence in the minds of the consumers in South Goa District in view of the observation of World Consumer Rights Day on March 15 and World Water Day on March 22.
Copies of the letter have been sent to PWD Principal Chief Engineer Uttam P Parsekar, Director, Directorate of Food & Drug Administration Jyoti J Sardesai, Deputy Director of Public Health Dr Jose D’Sa, Director of Civil Supplies Sandhya S Kamat.
