GOACAN raises concerns over fire incidents

MARGAO: GOACAN, the civic and consumer forum, has raised concerns about the increasing number of fire-related incidents in Goa and called for urgent action from the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). With National Fire Service Day approaching on April 14 and Fire Service Week from April 14 to April 20, GOACAN has urged DFES Director Nitin V Raiker to implement the District Action Plan for Fire Safety for 2024-25 in collaboration with local bodies and civil society organisations.

In a letter to Raiker, GOACAN highlighted the rise in fire incidents across Goa, including agricultural farms, forests, waste dumps, shops, apartments, and vehicles. The forum emphasised that these incidents not only result in significant financial losses but also cause mental stress and anxiety for those affected. GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins stressed the importance of preventing such incidents by implementing Fire Safety Protection & Prevention Plans in workplaces, businesses, and homes.

Furthermore, GOACAN proposed the creation of a District-level Co-ordination Committee chaired by the District Collector to oversee a year-long Fire Safety Action Plan. This committee would include representatives from various stakeholders such as local government bodies, industry associations, transportation companies, banks, housing societies, and consumer forums. The forum suggested holding biannual District Fire Safety meetings to address seasonal challenges and monitor progress.
