PANJIM: NGO GOACAN has approached the North Goa District Collectorate on the increasing illegal plant nurseries, some of which have encroached on government property.
The NGO claims that non-registered plant nurseries and push carts have become a worrying issue as several consumers are complaining of being cheated. “There have been several incidents where plants/saplings, seeds and so-called organic composts not being genuine sold to the consumers. We decided to raise the matter before the government seeking regulating the business,” convener Roland Martins told Herald emerging from the meeting with Collector Agnelo Fernandes on Wednesday.
The NGO has suggested that the Collectorate rope in expertise from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Department of Agriculture and Botanical Society of Goa to crackdown on the illegal plant nurseries. “The next hearing is scheduled on December 21. We hope our suggestion is considered in order to ensure that consumers and green lovers are not cheated,” he commented.
