MARGAO: Margao Municipality’s anti-encroachment drive kicked up a row of sorts on Tuesday with a former Municipal Chairperson accusing the civic team of discriminating against Goan fish vendors, while leaving non-Goan fruit vendors scot-free.
A group of fish vendors called on the Municipal Chairperson Dayanand Deulkar and pleaded for the return of the confiscated baskets laden with fish. The fish vendors contended that the Municipal team had seized fish from inside even as they were not causing any obstruction to traffic or pedestrians.
Intervening on behalf of the fish vendors, former MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho demanded to know from the Municipal Chairperson how the municipal workers refused to return back the fish baskets, while returning back fruits seized from non-Goan vendors. “This sort of discrimination against Goan vendors should stop immediately”, he demanded and took up the matter with the Chief Officer Deepali Naik.
Coutinho also demanded to know how the two fruit hand carts are permanently located near the Virginkar pump on the turn when even the traffic authorities have categorically stated their presence has resulted in traffic congestion. “Why cannot the market inspector take cognisance of the presence of these two fruit hand carts?” he demanded to know.
