MARGAO: Despite the Chief Minister’s declaration of the Goa seafarers’ welfare pension scheme as permanent in the legislative assembly, the scheme has yet to be officially notified.
The Goan Seamen’s Association of India (GSAI) has expressed concern over the delay in notifying the scheme, which has prevented eligible applicants from accessing its benefits.
Frank Viegas, President of GSAI, stated, “The NRI department has not yet established the scrutiny committee. Some new applicants have already submitted their forms, but they are awaiting review. Additionally, there is a shortage of application forms for the Goa Welfare Pension Scheme for Seafarers/Widows. Many retired seafarers and widows eagerly await the availability of these forms from the NRI Office.”
He emphasized the importance of recognizing the significant contributions of seafarers to the maritime industry and providing them with schemes that ensure a comfortable retirement.
He concluded, “Many retired seamen and widows rely entirely on this scheme for their daily livelihood. This pension scheme has been a crucial financial support for retired seamen, the medically unfit, and widows.”
