PANJIM: The performance of Class X students in Goa, in mathematics is below the national average, but Goan students do exceptionally well in subjects like English, science and social science, says a National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2018, conducted by National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
NAS 2018, held in mathematics, social science, science, English and modern Indian languages – reading comprehension for Class X, also says that the students’ performance is below national average as far as modern languages are concerned.
The data revealed recently states that the average performance of student in mathematics is 33 percent, while the national average is 34 percent. While performance of students of the general category and other backward class (OBC) has been on par with the national average, students from scheduled caste (SC) and schedule tribe (ST) fall short.
The sample survey indicates that students have fallen short in sub-subjects like algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, number system and statistics.
Almost 70 per cent students scored below 35 per cent during the sample test conducted by NAS. It also concluded that only 15 per cent of schools in the State have a mathematics laboratory.
In the science field, almost in every subject students’ performance is rated above the national average of 34 per cent. The State percentage is 39 per cent. Similarly in social science, comprising history, geography, economics and political science, students’ skills show much above the national average of 39 per cent.
English language turned out to be the favourite amongst Goan students. The State average stood at 52 per cent as against the national average of 36 per cent. Students have topped in reading comprehensions and language element.
Further, the survey also revealed that 97 per cent schools have their own science laboratory, while 94 per cent schools have libraries. Also, almost 88 per cent of the teachers are permanent while only 12 per cent are temporary.
