Goans for Goa rubbishes EIA report for airport

MARGAO: Goans for Goa (GFG) has condemned the preliminary report of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), a study of the proposed Greenfield airport conducted by the Engineers India Limited (EIL), as false and misleading and is manipulated and tailored to suit vested interests, who are clamouring to dump Mopa on the Goan people.

In a statement, GFG said the statement made by EIL, “that the airport project will not have a major impact on air, water, land resources and environment” is shocking, only proving that this report is done without taking into account the actual ground realities thereby raising concern and a shadow of doubt on the credibility of EIL, whether this body is qualified to conduct this type of a study.
GFG president Kennedy Afonso said that the observations made by EIL that there are only a few trees, mainly bushes, and only 14 houses will be displaced, is an outright lie, and contradicts their own observations. “On one hand it says there are 385 plant species, 88 species of birds, 33 butterflies species, 12 reptile species, and 11 mammal species, documented in the area, and on the other hand its says there are no trees”, he said, while demanding to know if there are only 14 houses for displacement, how come hundreds of compensation cheques were issued to the displaced, most of them with homes?
GFG demanded that this EIA report be immediately scrapped and should not be submitted to the MOEF, as it is false and misleading.
