PANJIM: North Goa Superintendent of Police (SP) Nidhin Valsan has said that the Goa Police are seizing an average 45-kilogramme of drugs every month.

He also said that Goans have been found involved in drugs trade and the police through a coordinated effort are trying to bring the drug peddlers including Goans to justice.

The first District Level meeting of the Narco Coordination Centre Committee (NCORD) was held under chairmanship of District Collector North Goa Mamu Hage. The officials of Goa Police, Anti Narcotics Cell, Narcotics Control Bureau, Coast Guard and other agencies were a part of the maiden meeting. Strategies to stop demand and supply were discussed at the meeting.

Valsan said, “On an average 45-kilogramme of all types of drugs are being seized in Goa every month. However, we are ready to deal with this situation. We have developed our intelligence network, all our police officers are checking on the borders. Through the NCORD meeting we will be able to curb the drug trade in the State.”

“Drug peddling is the supply chain and recently we have found out that there are Goans involved in drugs cases. They are actually the last point contact which actually connects the drug user to the drugs supplier,” said Valsan. “Through a coordinated mechanism we are trying to find out these people and bring them to justice,” he added.

“In our information we have not found any place where there is mass scale of creation or manufacture of drugs. Only because Goa is a tourism destination there is a demand for drugs,” said Valsan.

Valsan informed that the enforcement agencies are taking definite actions to cut down the supply of drugs.

“The demand has to be cut down by creating lot of awareness among the society. We have Education, Social Justice Department and the drugs de-addiction centres who are a part of the meeting to plan and control the demand as well as supply of drugs,” he said.
