PANJIM: Belgavi and Hubli police officials said that except for a few stray incidents nothing major has been reported.
In Belgavi the situation was tense in the city area around noon but it was brought under control soon by the police.
Additional SP Ravindra Gadadi speaking to Herald on the phone said, “The situation is by far under control. The agitators were upset with some statements made by Goa chief minister and hence they called for a bandh,” he said.
“There was a bit of tension in the afternoon but a strong police presence nullified the protestors,” he said adding that around 1200 police personnel have been deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
He, however, admitted that Goan vehicles were stopped around Jambuti so that no damage is done to them. Gadadi also assured that all Goans in Belgavi are safe and are given adequate protection.
In Hubli-Dharwad, the situation remained normal despite the bandh call. “The situation is under control and no untoward incident has been reported,” Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner P H Rane told Herald.
“There is a rasta roko at many places but besides that there is no problem here and the situation will improve by tomorrow,” he said. He added that safety of all Goan vehicles in the district is being monitored. “Don’t worry all Goans are safe here,” he said.
