MARGAO: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has taken decisive action against seven shipping companies based in the
Cortalim area, instructing them to cease all repair and commercial operations immediately.
In response to numerous directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and a joint committee report highlighting ongoing violations, the GCZMA has issued this directive under relevant environmental regulations.
Previously, the NGT had instructed the GCZMA to prevent private entities from operating in the area.
Furthermore, the GCZMA has mandated the suspension of electricity and water services to these establishments until the resolution of pending show-cause notices, aiming to ensure strict adherence to regulations and prevent further harm to the fragile ecosystem.
This enforcement by the GCZMA stems from a protracted legal battle initiated by Salu D’Souza, who raised concerns about pollution and unlawful encroachment in the Cortalim creek resulting from shipbuilding activities.
The NGT had earlier formed a joint committee with representatives from various environmental agencies to investigate and devise a restoration plan.
Local residents and environmental activists are alarmed by the situation, emphasizing the importance of preserving the coastal ecosystem and safeguarding the fishing rights of the community.
It may be recalled that the earlier notices had asked why directions should not be issued for asking the companies to restore the land to its original condition. The companies were also asked to file
their replies with compliance reports and to also present all licenses and approvals that had been granted by the authorities including GCZMA.
