MAPUSA: The former Union Minister and Goa Observer in-charge of Congress P. Chidambaram on Tuesday said that Goa’s environment and rich culture is under threat, which needs to be tackled.

“People from various constituencies of Goa told me that the unique and rich culture of Goa, environment and history of Goa is under threat.  If this is true, then all will have to act for welfare of Goa,” said Chidambaram.

Chidambaram while interacting with representatives of various NGOs said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has done injustice on NGO’s by restricting their functioning.

“Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had rejected application of Missionaries of Charity’s for renewal of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act registration on pretext that eligibility conditions were not met,” said Chidambaram.

“Powers are with the people but political parties think that they have the power. When political parties go against people’s desire and interest, then people have the right to throw them out,’’ said Chidambaram.

“This interaction session will not stop with election but will continue even after that. I promise the people of Goa that, once we form government, Congress leaders will come back to you and will consult to run the government,” he assured.
