Goa’s Long-Awaited Monsoon Catches Residents Off Guard

The residents of Goa can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the much-awaited monsoon season has arrived in the state, bringing an end to the scorching heat. The long-anticipated rainfall has brought immense joy and comfort to the people who had been eagerly awaiting its arrival. However, the unexpected downpour on Thursday evening caught many off guard, as the monsoons were predicted to arrive after June 10. Both the North and South districts of Goa experienced rain showers, accompanied by occasional lightning and thunder.

While the recent rains have brought much-needed relief from the sweltering temperatures, they have also caused some havoc in certain areas. The heavy rains and strong winds led to the collapse of a massive tamarind tree onto a house near the Shantadurga Temple in Calangute. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far.

According to the Meteorological Centre Goa, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected in a few areas across both North and South Goa districts over the next 3-4 hours. In isolated places, there may be light to moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, thunder, and winds gusting up to approximately 40 kmph. Thunderstorm cells are approaching the talukas of Bardez, Tiswadi, and Mormugao, while other talukas are also expected to be affected as the clouds move eastward.

The arrival of the monsoon has brought a mix of relief and excitement to the people of Goa, but it is essential to stay cautious and prepared for any possible consequences of the heavy rains and storms.
