Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott and Goencho Ekvott Pay Tribute to Matanhy Saldanha on 75th Birthday Anniversary

Panjim: On the 75th birthday anniversary of the late Matanhy Saldanha, prominent figures and members of Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott, along with Goencho Ekvott, gathered to pay their respects at Cansaulim. Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott demanded the complete cancellation of the proposed “AHOY Marina” establishment for small boat/yacht/craft parking by Mormugao Port Authority and M/s. Kargwal Constructions Private Limited. Their concerns were based on assessments by the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Old Goa, which indicated that the project could negatively impact marine biodiversity and traditional fishermen in the region.

Olencio Simoes, General Secretary of the organization, expressed his gratitude to the Goan fishing community, which actively supported the construction of a statue in memory of Matanhy Saldanha. Eleven years after his passing, Matanhy is remembered with the same enthusiasm and vigour.

Agnelo Rodrigues, President of the group, reflected on the absence of the selfless dedication Matanhy displayed towards Goa. Matanhy Saldanha served Goa for over 40 years with an unwavering commitment to the fishing community and the protection of the environment. His tireless efforts included leading various protests and organizations that not only prevented the destruction of Goa but also influenced the creation of new policies and laws.

Rodrigues also urged political parties to field candidates like Captain Viriato Fernandes for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing that candidates should prioritize Goa’s interests over personal gain.

The Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott vowed to oppose all such Sagarmala projects that could harm Goa’s social fabric and urged the government to withdraw such initiatives in the state’s best interests.
