The satellite market mooted at Gogol three decades ago might not have seen light of the day yet – thanks to the government’s indifference and the Margao Municipal Council’s apathy. But, the fish vendors operating from the Gogol area finally got a roof over their heads two days ago, funded by local MLA Vijai Sardesai’s ‘We for Fatorda’ Trust.
The shed was inaugurated by the Fatorda MLA in the presence of ward Councillor Tito Cardozo and former Fatorda MLA Luis Alex Cardozo. “These vendors were sitting without a shed all these years. I thank the MLA for funding the project which will not only benefit the vendors, but the customers as well”, Mama Cardozo said.
Ward Councillor Tito Cardozo told the gathering that the MLA got the shed erected within 20 days since he requested Vijai to work out a solution to the long standing problem faced by the vendors.
Incidentally, Vijai’s bête noire and BJP leader Damu Naik wondered how the local MLA could erect and inaugurate the shed without permission from the government and municipality. “The area in question is a government land. It is not acquired for the market. The Collector’s office should earmark and notify the land. The shed is totally illegal,” Damu said, while seeking to know how Vijai’s ‘We For Fatorda’ can claim that the shed is the satellite market.
