VASCO: The air intelligence unit of Goa Customs seized one kilo gold worth Rs 26.85 lakh from an international passenger, at Dabolim airport on Tuesday.
The Joint Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, Goa, S K Sinha said that the seizure was made after the alert officials noticed the gold concealed in the trolley bag of Farhan Abdulla Haneef, a native of Kerala, who had arrived at Dabolim from Doha by a Qatar Airways flight.
“The passenger had opted to walk through green channel and had declared the value of dutiable goods being imported as ‘Nil’, however, during the course of search we found the gold concealed in the base of the baggage. On interrogation, the passenger revealed that the gold bar was handed over to him by one Anand from Dubai,” Sinha said.
A case under section 110 of Customs Act 1962 has been registered against the passenger for smuggling in gold. The passenger has been placed under arrest and further investigation is in process.
