Government hints at shifting IT habitat

PANJIM: The government has hinted that it is looking to shift the proposed IT habitat from Dona Paula, claiming that not a single investor has shown any interest to buy plots at the existing site.

“I agree we have to shift the IT Park,” Deputy Chief Minister and IT minister Francis D’Souza told the House in response to Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho’s suggestion in this regard. He also said that government’s recent effort to auction some plots at the site failed to attract investors wherein base price of Rs 25,000 per sq mtrs was fixed.
“Not even one investor showed up because they say that when IT plots in other states like in Chennai, Maharashtra and Karnataka are given for free, why should they spend money in Goa? They are also granted 15 years income tax exemption and other tax benefits,” he said.
D’Souza, also proposed to change the IT policy to attract industrialists. Once commissioned, the park was expected to attract investments of around Rs 500 crore and provide employment to 10,000 persons.
Two months ago, the government had indicated they may use the prime Dona Paula land for real estate.
