Government notifies 85 ‘weaker panchayats’

These local bodies will now receive grants under the Grant of Financial Assistance of Economically Weaker Panchayats for strengthening their administration scheme for 2017-18

PANJIM: The Goa government on Tuesday has notified 85 panchayats across the state as ‘weaker panchayats’ following the assessment of the income and expenditure of every local body.
Of the total 191 panchayats across Goa, 16 in Pernem, 12 in Bardez, 11 in Bicholim, 10 in Salcete, 5 in Tiswadi, 3 in Quepem, 7 in Canacona, 6 in Sanguem, 8 in Sattari, 5 in Ponda and one each in Mormugao and Dharbandora have been notified as “weaker panchayats”.
According to the government provisions, all the 85 panchayats will now receive grants under the Grant of Financial Assistance of Economically Weaker Panchayats for strengthening their administration scheme for the year 2017-18.
“After assessment of the income and expenditure of every Panchayat in the manner provided in the above said scheme, the village panchayat as listed in the Annexure appended hereto have been identified as weaker panchayats eligible for grants from the government for the year 2017-18. The quantum of grants that shall be sanctioned to the weaker panchayats under the above said scheme or any other schemes of the state government shall be notified separately by the Director of Panchayats,” reads the government notification.
