In a groundbreaking announcement, Dr. Shivanand Bandekar, the Dean of Goa Medical College (GMC), revealed that medicines for three life-threatening conditions—Haemophilia, Breast Cancer, and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)—will be offered free of cost at GMC. The government’s decision, declared by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday, aims to extend this free treatment to patients not only in Goa but also from other states.
“Today, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has taken three revolutionary decisions for the betterment of Goa. Free treatment will be provided to 48 Haemophilia patients, 200-300 Breast Cancer women, and Spinal Muscular Atrophy disorder patients every year by the Health Department of the Government of Goa,” stated GMC Dean, Dr. Shivanand Bandekar.
Dr. Bandekar emphasized that currently, there are only four active cases of Spinal Muscular Atrophy disorder and 48 Haemophilia cases awaiting treatment in Goa. He proudly declared, “Goa will become the first state to provide SMA medicine, which costs 1.5 to 2 crores, to these four patients free of cost. The 48 Haemophilia patients will be completely cured with the help of Goa Medical College. Goa will be the first state to be 100% free of Haemophilia. Goans and non-Goans residing in Goa, including those without a Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana (DDSSY) card, can avail the benefits of Haemophilia medicines.”
Risdipalm, an oral medicine used to treat Spinal Muscular Atrophy—a rare nerve and muscle disorder characterized by the loss of lower motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting, often leading to early death—will be provided free of cost. “Over time, the child starts deteriorating due to Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The Goa government will assist these patients and their families by donating the Risdipalm medicine worth Rs 1.5 to 2 crores for free,” affirmed Health Minister Vishwajit Rane. This initiative reflects a significant step towards ensuring accessible and affordable healthcare for those facing these critical medical conditions in Goa and beyond.
