The governor was speaking at a Census Medal Awards distribution function held in seminar hall at Secretariat Porvorim today to honour those persons who have contributed significantly to the successful conduct and completion of Census 2011. She also said that this exercise was very important work for a fast-progressing and populous nation like ours, as it “requires an accurate and comprehensive picture of the population and related information.”
The Governor emphasized that conducting a census is a gigantic task and many government officers and officials from the Central and State government involved in this exercise had to work hard in a time-bound manner and collect data with meticulous care, devotion and responsibility facing considerable stress and strain.
Additional MHA, ORGI, New Delhi, A K Samal in his keynote address said that conducting the census in India is a herculean task and requires crusaders’ zeal to accomplish this national task within a rigid time schedule. It is a challenging task in India because of its vastness in area and huge population with multi-ethnic, multi lingual, multi cultural society etc.
“India is emerging as a strong, self-reliant and modern nation and the basic benchmark statistics on the state of housing conditions, household amenities and assets, human resources, demography, culture and economic structure recorded at Census 2011 will help not only planners, policy makers and other stake holders in assessing the success of ongoing schemes, but would also assist in formulating future developmental plans,” he said, adding, “So census plays an important role in socio-economic development of the nation.”
Sinha handed over Presidential Census Silver and Bronze medals and certificates of honour to 50 recipients for their outstanding work in census operation during 2011.
