PANJIM: Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Saturday issued an order dissolving the current Goa Legislative Assembly with immediate effect, thus paving the way for the formation of a new government in the State.
The term of the present Goa Legislative Assembly was to end on March 15, 2022.
The Governor dissolved the Assembly in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (b) of clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant met the Governor and submitted his resignation to him. The Governor accepted the resignation and asked him to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until alternate arrangements are made.
The Chief Minister also submitted to the Governor two resolutions passed by the Cabinet – one recommending dissolution of the current Legislative Assembly and second thanking the people of Goa for giving them opportunity to serve them again.
The State Cabinet on Friday had approved a proposal to recommend the Governor the dissolution of the 7th Goa Legislative Assembly, a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 20 seats and inched closer to retain power, with the help of independents and other small parties.
