Govt agrees to ‘GWMC plan’ for Sonsoddo

MARGAO: The State government has placed their faith in a ‘comprehensive plan’ which has been prepared by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to resolve the Sonsoddo issue.

In this regard, the GWMC Managing Director Levinson Martins gave detailed presentation at Sonsoddo to the Waste Management Minister Atanasio Monserrate and the three MLAs who are part of the High Powered Coordination Committee (HPCC)   Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. Senior officials of other departments were also present.

Martins explained that the plan has short term and long term goals.

“We have a roadmap. The first aim is to complete maximum of the bioremediation work that is already underway by May-end as when the monsoon begins, we will have to stop that work on the legacy dump site. During the monsoon we have to cover it as per procedure and start again. We want to complete all the bioremediation work by December 2020,” said Martins.

“Once the bioremediation is complete, we will clear this land (existing legacy dump site) at the old shed, which is around 3,000 square metres in size. We will build a retaining wall, we will clean it and it is here that we will put our road map in action”, he added. This land incidentally will be handed over by MMC to GWMC.

He explained that GWMC will set up two 25 TDP (tonnes per day) biomethanisation plants at Sonsoddo that will have biodigestors and other inventory like a screening centre, an effluent treatment centre, etc.

Martins added that GWMC is removing the waste inside the existing shed for bioremediation by May-end, which will clear out space and decrease the risk of fire reoccurring at Sonsoddo.
