Govt asks start-ups to come up with alternative to plastic

MARGAO: With an aim of finding innovative alternatives that the public can use in place of single-use plastic, the Department of Science and Technology had a meeting with start-ups at the Forum for Innovation Incubation Research and Entrepreneurship (FiiRE) that is based at Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda. The Managing Director (MD) of Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Levinson Martins was also present

The State government has banned the use of single-use plastic but as Secretary of the Science and Technology Ramesh Verma explained, “The public is now searching for alternatives that they can use in place of plastic.”

“We have to do more activities to create awareness and also strengthen the implementation of the ban wherein these alternatives can yield better results in that direction. The public has been in favour of the ban and the response has been positive,” he added.

He noted that there will be monthly review meetings on this topic.

“Here, we discussed the ideas that are being worked on and the team is working nicely. We also have to promote start-ups as well and in the coming months, we want to organise an event where all their ideas can be showcased to the public,” Verma added.

The start-ups, which are working on improving waste management with the objective of uplifting Goa’s image as a tourist destination also discussed other topics at this meeting including funding and the process of GI tagging in the State.
