Govt calls for striking a chord between States, nations to counter human trafficking

Stating that trafficking of human being is a serious crime as it takes away their human right, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said strengthening cooperation and establishing communication between States and neighbouring countries could be effective tools in countering trafficking.

Speaking at the State-level conference on anti-human trafficking at Panjim, Sawant said the menace of human trafficking is a major cause of concern across the world as it leads to exploitation in the form of prostitution, forced marriages, begging, organ trade, drugs trafficking and arms burgling.

Sawant said the objective of the conference is to sensitise law enforcement agencies and their concerned departments and NGOs in the State on the issues related to trafficking and to enable the law enforcing officers to detect the trafficking incidents and take appropriate action.

He said the conference will bring positive change in the attitude of police, improving their functioning and equip them with the adequate knowledge of the issue.

The Chief Minister said the victims of trafficking often face hardships in terms of physical violence, sexual abuse and harassment threats. He hoped that with regular guidance, training and sensitising all the stakeholders in the State will be able to tackle the menace of human trafficking in an effective manner.

“Goa should be role model State in curbing human trafficking menace,” he asserted.

Director General of Police (DGP) Jaspal Singh, SP Bossuet Silva, police officers, government officials and representatives of NGOs were also present.
