MARGAO, JUNE 18
PWD Minister Churchill Alemao on Friday said the Congress government is committed towards the upliftment of the weaker sections of society and sought cooperation from the people to usher in all round development of the state.
Addressing a gathering of freedom fighters, students and citizens at the historic Lohia Chowk on the occasion of Goa Revolution Day, the PWD Minister said the state has progressed on all fronts since its Liberation from the Portuguese.
He said the present government headed by Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat is committed to work for the welfare of the common and weaker sections of society. He appealed to the citizens to join hands and cooperate with the government to bring about the development.
Remembering the freedom fighters for the sacrifices made to liberate the state from the foreign yoke, Alemao said the government and the people of Goa will never forget the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters during the liberation struggle.
Alemao made a mention of the RDA department, wherein he said the Central Government headed by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has replaced the stringent BLP norms, which will now allow inclusion of more and more Goans in the BPL list.
He also appealed to the people to avail benefits under the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme following the State Government’s decision to hike the daily wage to Rs 150.
Meanwhile, NGO Gomant Samvardhan Sanstha in collaboration with Yuva de Goa took out a vehicle rally from the residence of late Dr Juliao Menezes at Assolna this evening in memory of late Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr Menezes.
The rally highlighted the contributions made by Dr Lohia along with Dr Menezes and the village of Assolna to the freedom struggle of Goa.
The Sanstha recalled that Dr Lohia had come to stay at the residence of his friend Dr Juliao Menezes at Assolna on June 10, 1946 after his release from jail. The first revolution against the Portuguese rule thus commenced from Assolna itself, said Sanstha President Adv Narendra Sawaikar. The rally later culminated at the Lohia Maidan later in the evening.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat participated in the program organised by the Freedom fighters at the Lohia Maidan this evening.
