PANJIM: The Goa government is confident of setting up a fully equipped cyber crime investigation cell of the Goa police, before the end of the financial year 2013-14.
Additional Secretary (Home) Sanjiv Gadkar told Herald that the cell will be equipped with all machinery including special software, computers and printers to investigate the rising cases of cyber crimes in the State.
Besides, an advertisement seeking applications from eligible candidates for the technical posts will be shortly issued.
“The candidates must meet the academic and professional requirements for the posts. In case suitable candidates are not found, then there could be some relaxation,” he said.
Lately, the Home department has in principle granted approval for the setting up of the elite cell and recruiting three technical experts.
In 2010, Mumbai based cyber expert Harold D’Costa, who runs Intelligent Quotient Security System in Mumbai and assists police of various states, had forwarded a detailed proposal on behalf of Goa police for a cyber crime cell.
The urgency for the cell was essentially to counter an exponential increase in the crimes committed through internet and computer technology. The proposal, which during the erstwhile government traveled files and earning remarks had included crucial requirements like state-of-the-art infrastructure with computers and laptops connected with high speed internet connection, forensic software for gathering and examination of evidence, dedicated server with RAID technology, clean room, biometric for safety, CCTV, Storage devices with safe lockers, Email Tracking Software, stenography tools, Website authentication software, CDR analysis software and Data recovery tool kit.
Meanwhile, Gadkar informed that around eight to nine police officers will be part of the team. It will also have a separate superintendent of police. The police department, on an average gets 26 cases every year, almost all of which are referred to D’Costa for assistance.
