Govt considers equipping education institutions with solar units

PANJIM: The Goa government is contemplating to equip education institutions in the State with solar power generating units connected to the electricity grid to reduce their electricity bills.

Power Minister Nilesh Cabral said the Government College of Commerce and Economics at Borda-Margao, which was fitted with 30-KW solar rooftop power generating plant connected to the grid has been saving 57 per cent electrical consumption for last three months. 

Cabral said the 30-KW solar rooftop power plant was installed and connected to the grid on January 21, 2020. 

The bidirectional meter and check meter were installed by the Electricity Department for measuring the import of grid power and export of solar power to the grid, he added.   

According to Cabral, 30-KW solar power plant at the Government College, Borda-Margao has generated 54,282KWh and is generating an average 113kWh per day. The total saving of average day-to-day electrical consumption of the college is 57 per cent and the net saving till date is approximately Rs 2.80 lakh.

Similar was the case of Goa university which is now saving  33 per cent its electricity bills ie nearly Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh through renewable energy systems,” he said.
