MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Reginaldo on Wednesday said the Government’s decision to once again postpone the 36th edition of National Games in Goa has infuriated the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The Congress MLA recalled the IOA’s statement that Goa never discussed anything with it and that the government took a unilateral decision to postpone the Games. The IOA added that the State of Goa should have had the “basic courtesy” of consulting with it (IOA) before taking a decision on postponing the Games.
“Though the State government has cited the prevailing coronavirus pandemic as the reason for the postponement of the Games, scheduled from October 20 to November 4, 2020, let us be honest that the State government had failed to complete several of the said National Games infrastructural projects including the swimming pool at Campal, artificial hockey turf ground at Peddem Sports Complex and upgradation of squash court at Chicalim,” Reginaldo claimed.
“It is pertinent to note that like education and health even sports is not a priority for our Goa government, but only big infrastructure projects costing tonnes of money, which only creates havoc to the environment” Reginaldo alleged.
“It would not be wrong to state that with the BJP-led government postponing the National Games is a fashion as it can be seen it has floundered in its previous term (2012-2017) and now ( 2017-to the present). By not completing the requisite infrastructure for the National Games, the State government has again sullied the name of brand Goa,” he charged.
“I, like other Goenkars, have been keen that Goa hosts this premier national sporting extravaganza,” he said.
