Govt ends grace period given to shacks for watersports

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte says step taken based on reports of kayaking activities still continuing in the Baga river, despite watersports banned from June 1

CALANGUTE: Tourism minister Rohan Khaunte has said that the grace period extension given to beach shacks and watersports has ended following claims that kayaking activities are still continuing in the Baga river despite watersports being banned from June 1.

“This year shack owners had some problems, because of elections, because December season did not go well, and they asked for the season to be extended by a few days, so we gave them an extension,” he said while responding to media queries following claims that some operators have continued kayaking activities in Baga taking advantage of the weak monsoon.

“Similarly, with watersports, we asked the Captain of Ports if it would be feasible or no. It was allowed for the first week of June. Now the watersports is not safe and they should be stopped. If kayaking is going on, we will ensure that appropriate action is taken,” he said.

Khaunte also urged people to dial the toll-free tourism department number 1364 to report illegal tourism activities.
