PANJIM: The State government has estimated around Rs one crore loss to the farmers due to incessant post-monsoon showers that led to huge destruction of crops across Goa.
In October, Goa received over 540mm of rainfall, which was almost 240 per cent surplus. The cyclone ‘Kyarr’ developed in Arabian Sea brought heavy rains to the State.
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Agriculture Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar said that the post-monsoon crop damage assessment is been done by Zonal Agriculture Officers (ZAO) and simultaneously applications are also invited from the affected farmers.
“The initial loss seems to be around Rs one crore,” he said adding that the South West monsoon had led to crop damage of around Rs nine crore.
Speaking about the compensation to the farmers, whose crops were damaged during the monsoons, Kavlekar said that the compensation has been made towards banana cultivation, while for paddy it would be done now.
