PANJIM: The State’s sole sugar factory — Sanjivani Sakhar Karkhana, finally brought under the ambit of Agriculture Department. A notification in this regard was issued on Monday.
The State Cabinet has last month resolved to transfer the sugar factory from the Registrar of Cooperative Societies to the Agriculture Department for its smooth functioning.
The Governor of Goa approved amendment to the Business of the Government of Goa (Allocation) Rules, 2020, thereby transferring the factory from Cooperative Societies to the Agriculture Department. The factory, which has incurred heavy losses, is non-operational since the last two seasons.
The government is currently exploring various options including public private partnership (PPP) to restart the operation of the factory.
Further, the Agriculture Marketing will also now be functioning under the Agriculture Department.
