PANJIM: The State Government on Friday extended the benefit of its debt relief scheme for mining-affected borrowers of financial institutions till March 31.
The extension is limited to only those proposals that are pending with the banks or those which were rejected earlier on technical grounds.
Since the time it was launched in 2012, this is the sixth time scheme has been extended by the government. The scheme was launched after mining was first banned in the State.
The former Director of Mines Ashutosh Apte, in a notification issued on February 12, announced extension of the scheme upto March 31.
“Since this is the last revision of the scheme, the final authority to grant the benefit either fully or partly in exceptional cases in either single case or group of cases shall lie with the chief minister whose decision shall be final, in case Screening Committee either defers the decision on proposal or decides on such proposal in negative,” the notification stated.
As per the scheme, subsidy upto 35 per cent on the total loan settlement amount is provided. The banks and financial institutions are granting waiver of 100 per cent loan interest from September 2012 and 40 per cent waiver on principle loan amount for truck owners while 30 per cent to barge owners.
