Govt formulates scheme for damage caused by wild animals

PANJIM: After the four tiger killings in Sattari in January this year, Department of Forest has formulated a scheme for compensation for damage caused by wild animals, grant on account of loss of human life, permanent disability or injury and/or damage to cattle or property caused by “wild animals” or “compensation for damage by wild animals”.

To simplify the procedure for determination and timely disbursement of appropriate compensation to the affected person(s), the term ‘Wild Animal’ will be as defined in the Wild Life (Protection) Act, (Central Act 53 of 1972).

The Forest Department says the compensation for damage by wild animals for causing death/injury to humans and loss to cattle/damage to property will be determined and paid based on the terms and conditions and the rates as mentioned (in box).

The rate of compensation on account of loss of human life under ex-gratia payment for death injury to human life for death will be Rs 10 lakh, for permanent disability (viz loss of limb, eye, etc.) will be Rs 5 lakh and injury other than permanent disability will be Rs 1 lakh or the entire cost of treatment whichever is less.

The rate of compensation for loss of cattle or damage to property caused by wild animals, in case of death of calf will be Rs 10,000, local cow/buffalo/bullock will be Rs 25,000. Jersey cow will be Rs 50,000, pig/sheep/goat will be Rs 5,000 injury to cattle Rs 15,000, or as per actual assessment, whichever is less and damage to house/other property will be Rs 25,000 or actual assessment, whichever is less.

Any other item not mentioned above, the DCF concerned will decide the amount on merit after examining the case submitted by the RFO.
