MARGAO: The Congress Legislative Party on Monday alleged that the BJP-led government has curtailed the Monsoon Assembly Session to restrict the Opposition from questioning on the apparent issues that the State is facing today.

The CLP also decided to raise the issue of extending the duration of the Assembly Session, floor management and other various issues during the Business Advisory Committee Meeting informing Kamat.

CLP Leader Digambar Kamat addressed the Congress Legislative Party meeting along with Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro.

While addressing the media persons after the CLP meet, Kamat said, “We have planned to raise questions and seek explanations from the government on the issues of State financial status, COVID-19 pandemic, Labour Scam, collapse of law and order, River Mhadei, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) clearances given to the projects in forest areas and Western Ghats, which are environmentally sensitive Zones.”

“It is unfortunate that the government has reduced the duration of the forthcoming Goa Legislative Assembly Session, which provides opportunity to the Opposition to raise people’s issues and seek replies from the government,” Kamat said.

“The Administration of the State government is at a standstill. There are no developmental works happening in the State. The people are under tremendous financial burden post COVID lockdown and collapse of economy due to faulty policies of the government. The government has maintained silence on Rs 100 crore package demanded by Congress Party for marginalised sector,” he added.

“There is no information about Rs 2,000 crore package from the Central government and no one knows how much the State received from Rs 20 lakh crore package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” alleged Leader of Opposition.

“The people in Goa are under tremendous stress due to the stoppage of business activity post COVID lockdown. There is no source of income for the government. We want to give an ultimatum to the government to release White Paper on the financial status of Goa,” stated Kamat.

“The government has also failed in handling COVID pandemic situation in the State. The government has not paid the monthly pensions to the senior citizens, widows, physically disabled, house wives etc for almost six months now. This section of society is completely dependent on the government aid. The act of not to pay them their pension amount shows insensitivity of the government towards the common man,” criticised Kamat.

“The BJP government is adding to the woes of the common man by increasing fuel prices when the International Crude Oil prices are at all-time low. The government has overburdened the people by increasing petrol and diesel prices by almost Rs 10 per litre in the last 22 days,” charged the Navelim MLA.

“The government is insensitive towards the educational sector and is actually playing with the future and careers of the students. The government has no plans about how to go ahead with the educational system during this prevailing situation of COVID pandemic. The students who are trying to seek online education are facing difficulties with network connectivity,” stated the Ponda MLA.

Naik demanded that the government should immediately announce the action plan.

He further stated that the government needs to be sensible about giving decent farewell to the patients who die of COVID. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that the bodies are cremated with respect and honour.

The Curtorim MLA charged, “The BJP government has imposed Section 144 in the State to suppress the voice of the people and with a fear of people agitating against the government’s atrocities by increasing tariffs, taxes and duties and fees.”
