Govt imposes annual 61-day fishing ban from June 1

Prohibition on mechanical propulsion fishing vessels and on select nets enforced from June 1 to July 31

PANJIM: Goa government has announced the annual fishing ban, in a bid to protect its marine resources and ensure sustainable fishing practices. The ban will be effective from June 1 to July 31. It will be applicable to mechanical propulsion vessels, various fishing methods, trawl nets, and purse seine nets.

Under the stipulations of the Goa Marine Fishing Regulation Act of 1980, fishing vessels utilizing mechanical propulsion systems are barred from operation during this period. However, certain exemptions apply. Registered motorized canoes equipped with outboard or inboard motors of up to 10 HP capacity are allowed to continue fishing, provided they utilize gill nets exclusively.

This ban, which spans the entirety of Goa’s sea coast and territorial waters, underscores the government’s commitment to preserving marine biodiversity. The announcement, made by Director of Fisheries Shamila Monteiro, under the stipulations of the Goa Marine Fishing Regulation Act is in tune with preserving the state’s marine resources, especially during the spawning season and to safeguard the long-term well-being of Goa’s marine ecosystem.
