Govt job scheme gets back old name

PANJIM: The ‘Chief Minister’s Rojgar Yojna’ (CMRY), which had been renamed after renowned social entrepreneur late Dr Verghese Kurien, in 2014, has now been given its original name.

In a notification issued on Thursday, Joint Secretary (Debt Management Division) Meenakshi Gad said the government intends to revert back to its original name the Chief Minister Rojgar Yojana scheme.
The scheme was named after Dr Verghese Kurien on September 26, 2014, following an announcement in the State Budget 2013-14 by then chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
CMRY, the flagship scheme of the State government, is aimed at providing financial assistance to unemployed youth to set up businesses.
Speaking about the sudden development, a senior official said the decision was taken following confusion amongst people, who presumed that CMRY and Verghese Kurien are two different schemes.
“So also, the name Chief Minister to any scheme, gives more weightage,” the official said.
As on November 2015, the EDC has sanctioned term loans in excess of Rs 1900 crore to more than 9000 units under the scheme. As recently revealed by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, the scheme since its inception in 2002 has produced nearly 6000 new entrepreneurs.
