MARGAO: The South Goa District Administration has lifted the blanket ban on chickens and eggs coming from neighbouring States of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The ban remains on chickens and eggs coming from infected areas and areas within a 10-km radius of the infected spots.
The blanket ban was lifted after the Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services wrote to the District Administration informing that the government approved the lifting of the ban.
In the order drawn by the Additional Collector-I Surendra Naik chickens and eggs coming from Mumbai, Thane, Parbhani, Beed, and Dapoli and areas falling within a 10-km radius of the infected places will continue to be banned in Goa.
The District Administration had drawn an order banning the import of chickens and eggs from Maharashtra and Karnataka on January 12, after the chickens were found to be infected with the Bird-Flu.
Some days earlier, the vendors from Vasco had complained of shortage of chicken after the January 12 ban.
The vendors said they were happy because cases of the COVID-19 pandemic in the State had fallen but with the onset of the Bird Flu in the neighbouring States, the ban was introduced because the officials did not want the flu-infected chicken to enter into the State.
