Govt may do away with prior permissions to set up units

PANJIM: As a breather for businessmen looking to set up industrial units in the State, the government is likely to do away with the requirement of seeking prior permissions for operating a unit.

The government is in process of amending rules wherein the interested businessmen will just have to submit a self-declaration that they will comply with all statutory permissions required for the industries and based on declaration they will be allowed to set up and operate the industry.

Speaking to media persons, Minister for Industries Mauvin Godinho said that the government is working on amending laws to simplify the process for setting up industries in the State.

“We want more industries to come to Goa to generate employment. Our focus is to promote employment generating and non-polluting industries in the State,” he said.

Godinho said that there have been demands from the industry bodies to simplify the rules and regulations for setting up and operation of the industries. “We are working to resolve all the difficulties,” he said.

The Minister pointed out that as per current set of rules, the businessmen has to avail all the requisite permission before setting up or commencing a unit and this entire process of obtaining permissions takes more than one or two years.

“We want to simplify this. Like in other States, we too want to do away with such process. On submission of self-declaration, the government will allow them to set up industry,” he said.

“In the self-declaration, the project proponent has to basically state that they will follow all the procedure laid down for the industries,” he said.

“We are going to adopt best practices that are prevailing across India to promote industrialisation in the State,” Godinho said.
