Govt mulls over banning some aggressive dog breeds

PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said that the government is contemplating banning some aggressive breeds of dogs that posed danger to humans.

Speaking at the World Rabies Day function at Miramar, Sawant said some dogs viciously attack people and therefore the government is considering banning such breeds.

“We want to ban certain dogs because they attack directly, especially humans. The dogs are not vaccinated. Mission Rabies will submit a report to us and we will sterilize the dogs to bring the population of the dogs under control. It is we who face the trouble due to the increased number of stray dogs,” Sawant said.

The Chief Minister said on average, one to two fatal road accidents take place daily due to the stray dogs menace.

“That is why the sterilisation process is necessary to control accidents. Government has decided to take both -sterilisation project and the mission rabies project together.  We have controlled rabies, now we want to control the dog population,’’ the Chief Minister said.

Sawant asked the children present at the program to be compassionate about animals and not to hurt them.

The Chief Minister said the government will take up the dog sterilisation project to control the population of dogs and bring rabies under control.

He said, “Goa is a rabies-controlled State. Some bring dogs from other States out of their passion but they do not get them vaccinated.”

Sawant also cited the incident of Taleigao, wherein a Rottweiler breed dog jumped over the gate of a house and attacked two minor children, one seriously, last month.
