Govt notifies land at Bainguinim

The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has already invited bids for the construction 100 TDP waste management plant

PANJIM: The State government has notified 1.71 lakh square metres of land at Bainguinim, near Old Goa as waste management area for setting up 100 tonne per day (TPD) solid waste treatment plant. 

The notification issued by the Department of Science and Technology and Goa Waste Management Corporation has declared that the provisions of any law relating to local authorities providing for control and erection of buildings, levy and collection of taxes, fees and other dues to the local authorities which are in force in said area shall cease to apply thereof and the local authorities which were recovering house tax from the occupants of the said areas, under their respective laws shall be compensated by the government to the extent of the last financial years collection of taxes, for period of five years.

The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has already invited bids for the construction 100 TDP waste management plant at Bainguinim, which was opposed by the villagers complaining that it was proposed in close proximity of the residential complexes and near Old Goa churches.

Meanwhile, the Goa Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) has demanded that the Bainguinim Waste Management Plant be scrapped immediately. TMC Joint Convenor Samil Volvaikar said that the people have been opposing the proposed garbage plant for more than 16 years now since it was situated near a UNESCO-recognised heritage site and is adjoined by many prominent churches as well.
