Govt notifies new Motor Vehicles Tax slabs, caps tax on high-end bikes, cars

PANJIM: The State government has notified the Goa Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, rationalising the tax slabs structure and capping road tax on high end vehicles.

According to the Ordinance, the tax on high-end vehicles has been capped to a maximum of Rs 15 lakh.

Similarly, the tax on high-end motorcycles above Rs 3 lakh has been capped to a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh.

The amendment has also simplified the tax payments for rental cars and two-wheelers, which is hitherto payable annually. 

The Goa Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023 (Ordinance No. 5 of 2023) was promulgated by the Governor of Goa on December 15, 2023.

As per the new slab, a motorcycle or scooter or auto rickshaw, irrespective of its horsepower, whose cost does not exceed Rs 1.50 lakh, will be liable to pay a tax of 9 per cent of the cost of the vehicle.

Motorcycle, irrespective of its horsepower, whose cost exceeds Rs 1.50 lakh but does not exceed Rs 3.0 lakh, will be charged at the rate of 12 percent of the cost of the motorcycle.

Motorcycle, irrespective of its horsepower, whose cost exceeds Rs 3.0 lakh, will be charged at the rate of 15 percent of the cost of the motorcycle, provided maximum total tax is Rs 1.5 lakh.

Tricycle for every 25 kgs, weight or part thereof, will be charged at the rate of Rs 150.

Construction equipment vehicles as defined under rule 2 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 will be charged at the rate of 9 per cent of the cost of the vehicle as one time tax.
