PANJIM: Hailed as a one-of-its-kind initiative, a unique state-of-the-art project for last rites of people from different faiths was inaugurated on Monday, here.

Executed by Goa State Urban Development Agency, this includes a Hindu crematorium, Lingayat burial place, Muslim kabrastan and an Ismaili Khoja kabristan. Besides this, it also includes Panjim Animal Shelter and common facilities at the complex such as parking, toilet etc.

Panjim Mayor Uday Madkaikar, who was also seen in the evening at the complex to supervise the works, said this kind of project wouldn’t be found in the rest of the country.

He also said that of the Rs 10 crore (approximately) used for the project, around Rs one crore is left and he asked the Urban Development Minister Milind Naik to see if a maintenance fund can be created for the complex that could last for five years.

UD Minister Naik said, “This complex is an example of religious harmony in Goa and it shows how in Goa, people from different faiths live together peacefully.”

“The project could have been executed quickly if it was not for COVID-19 pandemic and that the project was a requirement for the capital city. The site could be a tourist attraction as it promotes the State in a very good light,” he added.

The project consultant was Rahul Desphande and Associates.
