Govt orders all schools to remain shut today due to intense heat

PANJIM: The intense heat has prompted the government to shut all educational institutions for a day on Saturday, June 10. 

Director Education Shailesh Zingde has issued a circular directing all the heads of government, government aided, unaided primary, middle, secondary, higher secondary and special schools are asked to compensate for the academic loss in future, if any. 

“Due to extreme heat and delay of the monsoons in the State, it is decided by the competent authority to close down all the institutions on June 10,” the circular stated.

The National Students Union of India (NSUI) Goa Unit and some parents had approached the government.

The NSUI and parents requesting to cancel the classes in view of extreme heat wave-like conditions prevailing in the State for last few days. 

The new academic term had commenced from June 5. 

The onset of southwest monsoon over Goa has been delayed so far from its normal date of arrival that is June 5. It was on June 8 that monsoon set over Kerala coast, almost a week after its traditional date of June 1. 

IMD has said that conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and southwest, Central and northeast of Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeastern states during next 24 hours. 

Meanwhile, very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ would intensify gradually during next 36 hours and move early north-northwestward during next 48 hours and north northwestwards during subsequent three days.

IMD has directed total suspension of fishing activities till June 15.
