Govt orders probe into death of tourist at Colva Beach

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte told House that the government is awaiting the report of the fact-finding inquiry team.

PORVORIM:  The State government has ordered a fact-finding inquiry into the death of 40-year old tourist from Jaipur, Rajasthan, who lost his life to electrocution at Colva Beach, last week. 

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte told House that the government is awaiting the report of the fact-finding inquiry team, comprising of engineer from Electricity Department and Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), to take necessary action. “We will also look into the matter of given compensation to the family of deceased once the report is out,” he said. 

Khaunte said that a police complaint has already been registered into the incident. 

Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas had raised the issue during the Zero Hour, wherein he said that, superintendent engineer (SE) of the Electricity Department had said that one ofthe live wires supplying power to the decorative lamps was exposed. 

The MLA said that the GTDC, who was dealing with the Colva Beach beautification, was involved in substandard work and hence action should be taken action the concerned contractor. The Tourism Department should also impose a penalty on the contractor who should have been maintaining the electricity poles,” he said. Viegas also demanded that the government compensate the family of the tourist.
