Govt paints rosy picture on garbage situation!

Despite the menace of garbage plaguing the state, the government seems to be sitting comfortably thinking that things are well under control.
In its reply to the ad hoc committee on municipal administration, the government has given a rosy picture of the garbage situation in the state.
“All the 14 municipal authorities in the state have partly implemented the Municipal Solid Waste (management and handling) rules 2000. The role of the government is to provide land for acquisition of land for landfill sites and related infrastructure,” the reply which was tabled in the house said.
Further, it says, “all the 14 municipalities have identified landfill sites with due authorization of Pollution Control Board.
“The 10 municipal authorities and Corporation of City of Panjim are already in possession of sites. The land acquisition of Mapusa, Curchorem-Cacora and Valpoi municipalities is under progress,” the reply says.
The government has said that all the municipal authorities have taken steps in setting up of ward wise composting stations for treatment and disposal of bio-degradable portion of solid waste.
“Steps have been taken to construct sanitary land fill sites for disposal of non-bio-degradable portion of solid waste. Both these steps will ensure effective management of solid waste of solid waste in municipal areas and control its impact on public health and environment,” the reply says adding “…the Mormugao and Bicholim Municipal councils have already set up waste treatment plant.”
It further states that the government has released Rs 35.40 cr grants to the municipal authorities.
