PANJIM: As the State government gears up to immunise children between the age group of 15 and 18 years, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has been roped in to ensure that the teenagers are given vaccines in their respective school campuses.
The State on Thursday received the first slot of 74,000 Covaxin vaccines to inoculate children from January 3. The online portal for registration will be open from January 1.
Speaking to the media persons, State Immunisation Officer Dr Rajendra Borkar confirmed that the first slot of 74,200 Covaxin vaccines arrived in the State.
Over a lakh children are likely to be vaccinated during the period.
Borkar said that in order to cover the maximum number of children, the Education Department has been roped in to ensure that the students are given vaccines in the campuses.
“We have sought necessary permission from the Education Department. This will ensure maximum students, in the beneficiary group are vaccinated,” he said.
Borkar said that a team of nurses would be visiting each school to immunise the students after taking written consent from their parents.
He said that the second dose of the vaccine would be given after 28 days to the students.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently announced the programme to vaccinate children between the age group of 15 and 18 years.
Similarly, he has also announced booster dose for frontline and frontline workers and people above 60 years, from January 10.
