Govt studying technicalities on proposed port at Betul: Parulekar

PORVORIM: Minister for Ports Administration Dilip Parulekar on Monday told the State Legislative Assembly that government is in process of undertaking technical studies and detailed project report for proposed Satellite Port at Betul.
“Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) endeavours to develop Betul as a Satellite Port. It is in the initial stage,” the Minister said replying to a question tabled by Independent MLA Benjamin Silva.
Parulekar said that MPT has proposed to the State government to acquire 107.10 acres of land (of which 73.5 acres are under the ownership of Goa State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd) for developing Port based facilities at Betul.
Mormugao Port does not possess any land at Betul, but has waterfront/foreshore area since this area falls within Port’s notified limits, he said.
“At present technical studies and Detailed Project Report are under preparation,” Minister told the House.
The Goenchea Ramponnkarancho Ekvott (GRE) and National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) along with 13 traditional fishermen association has raised strong objection to the proposed port by Union Minister for Shipping Nitin Gadkari, stating it will affect the marine life and livelihood.
